They are favored by easy access to travel and the development of communication technologies.

The main reasons for creating such relationships include:

mobility and migration – going abroad, Erasmus student exchanges, travelling,

change of place of residence – trips to work are the most common reason for meeting partners from a different cultural area,

social networks – give the opportunity to find a partner from a different culture, without the need to move,

professional globalization – work in international corporations, where joint projects are often created, conducive to establishing romantic relationships between representatives of different nationalities and cultures,

territorial changes – such as the shift of borders,

Openness to difference – often fascination with a different culture, language, traditions is the reason for entering into a love relationship with a representative of another nationality.

Cultural differences in everyday life

Cultural differences can occur even in the case of a relationship between a couple of the same nationality. However, in the case of an intercultural relationship, these differences are more pronounced. Daily dialogue, mutual respect and listening to the needs of the partner are important. It is a continuous process, requiring learning about differences and talking about one’s own cultures. Building a relationship is not possible without a sincere desire to break down barriers. It requires a lot of discussion, work, openness and learning to compromise. After some time, these couples create their own “cultural code” that combines the traditions of both environments.

Formal and practical challenges

There are many challenges in intercultural relationships, both practical and formal. The former are related to the art of good communication in everyday life, with an approach to relationships, religion, traditions, culinary or nutritional issues, or to raising possible children. Formal challenges, on the other hand, are related, for example, to the legalization of stay and visas.

There may also be problems with the recognition of documents such as a marriage certificate or a child’s birth certificate in another country. Legal issues of the relationship/marriage are also a challenge, which results from different regulations governing marriage, community of property or, in the case of divorce, custody of children. In addition, sometimes there are problems with the recognition of professional qualifications or access to health services for a foreigner partner.

Such situations can be a source of stress and lead to tense situations in the family. When difficulties pile up, it is worth finding professional help, for example in the form of a family therapist.

Culturally mixed couples are becoming more and more popular in the modern world.
