Difficulties arise, for example, during the therapy of couples who have children. In such a situation, patients must make sure that the youngest do not become involuntary witnesses to conversations with the therapist. During the session, we discuss various topics – sometimes difficult, sometimes intimate. Just talking about certain things can be reluctance, let alone when you have to wonder if a child will suddenly enter the room. For this reason, it is worth setting the dates of psychotherapy so that there are no people at home who do not participate in it. Parents can make appointments with a psychologist, for example, when children are at school or have extracurricular activities.

Restrictions on working with children

Family therapy is often attended by children as young as a few years old, and we work with them a little differently than with adults. We often use play, for example, drawing or role-playing. In the online version, we have somewhat limited access to these tools, so contact with the child requires more effort. We also have to take into account the fact that the youngest are more easily distracted when they are looking at a screen than when they are talking to a person who is physically right next to them. An additional distraction can be pets or favorite toys. However, with proper planning of the meeting, we can achieve just as good results as during a live conversation.

Technical Issues During Online Family Therapy

We live in a time when we have almost unlimited access to the Internet and computers. However, each of us knows that connectivity problems still happen, often at the most inopportune moment. A weak wi-fi signal or a sudden computer failure can make online family therapy difficult. It is worth preparing for possible complications as much as possible. If you have a second computer or access to another Internet network at hand, the risk of having to cancel the meeting is much lower.

Lack of readiness for therapy

In addition to the problems typical of online meetings, we must take into account the difficulties that may arise during any psychotherapy. One of them is the lack of real willingness of all participants to participate in the therapeutic process. It happens that one of the partners insists on couples therapy. The other agrees only so as not to risk ending the relationship, but does not really intend to sincerely work on the difficulties. In the case of therapy with the participation of children, teenagers may show a lack of real willingness to cooperate. In such a situation, we can offer consultation and counseling, because real family psychotherapy requires a real will to participate.

Technological development has made family therapy available online.
