In the psychological context, we are primarily interested in its spiritual dimension. Philosophy, ideology, religiosity and social norms are issues that are worth taking into account in therapeutic work. They enable a better understanding of the patient, reaching the subconscious and working with respect for individual values. Carl Gustav Jung was interested in the role of culture, and especially spirituality.

Table of contents

Religiosity and spirituality in Jung’s therapy

The role of cultural identity in the therapeutic process

Cultural identity and openness to change

Religiosity and spirituality in Jung’s therapy

According to Carl Gustav Jung, religion and spirituality are fundamental aspects of the human psyche. However, they should be based on direct experience of a higher power, not dogma. For Jung, personal experience mattered. He attributed to institutionalized religion a protective function against the direct experience of the sacred, which in certain circumstances could be overwhelming for man.

Jung also noted that some religious symbols will appear in different cultures. He considered the archetypes of rebirth or the figure of the mother to be deeply rooted in the collective unconscious.

The role of cultural identity in the therapeutic process

In modern psychotherapy, universal archetypes can still play an important role. However, we also go a step further and focus on the individual experience of culture. Cultural identity is one of the foundations on which each of us bases our way of perceiving ourselves and the world. We grow up in a specific cultural circle. In the course of socialization, we take over the system of values, beliefs and norms of behavior from him. Some of them serve us, others can cause internal tensions.

It happens that people who have experienced cultural trauma, passed down from generation to generation, go to therapy. It is the cause of fear, a sense of danger or an excessive need for control. In order to provide such a person with adequate support, we must first see the source of the problem.

From a therapeutic perspective, knowledge of the patient’s cultural identity allows for a better understanding of their problems, needs and way of communication. What in some circles can be a form of expression, in others can be perceived as a sign of disrespect. We must also remember that the role of the therapist is not to change the patient’s views and values. The exception is when specific beliefs affect an individual in a destructive way. This applies, for example, to people who were brought up in dysfunctional families.

Cultural identity and openness to change

On the other hand, taking into account a person’s cultural identity cannot lead to assigning him to rigid categories. Let’s not forget that values and beliefs can change. Most often this happens as a result of emigration, meetings with other people or certain experiences. The patient may then experience tension caused by different value systems. In such a situation, the therapist is to provide support in internal integration.

By culture we understand the entirety of the spiritual and material achievements of society.
