This stage is difficult, but it passes and the moment of regeneration comes. It is then worthwhile, for your own mental health, to use the support of a therapist. Such cooperation will help us cope with the feeling of strangeness and allow us to understand our own feelings and open up to new experiences.

A psychotherapist will allow us to better understand the essence of culture shock, we will learn to name our own emotions such as sadness, anxiety, loneliness or frustration. We will also gain support in building cultural competences, we will learn how to function properly in a new society while maintaining our own “I”. The therapist will help us work on our own identity and redefining ourselves in both professional and social contexts. Therapy can take place both stationary and online. It is conducted by experienced therapists. Many specialists know the specifics of living abroad and are helpful in overcoming social isolation. When choosing a therapist, it is worth paying attention to their cultural competences, i.e. the ability to go beyond their own value system and understand the client’s cultural specificity. It should be noted whether the specialist has undergone training in multicultural therapy or whether he or she has migration experience himself.

What is cultural adaptation?
