ADHD Therapy

A holistic approach in the psychotherapy office of Paulina Kubś, MSc

Diagnosis and therapy of ADHD require not only understanding the specifics of this disorder, but also taking into account the differences in its course in women and men. In our practice, we focus on an individual approach to the patient, analyzing the co-occurrence of ADHD with other difficulties, such as trauma, personality disorders or addictions.

Understanding gender differences in ADHD
Women with ADHD often go to therapy with a previous misdiagnosis, e.g. borderline. Characteristic symptoms, such as impulsivity, the need for strong sensations or difficulties in regulating emotions, can be confused with other disorders. Our approach involves a thorough analysis of the patient’s history and experiences in order to accurately determine what problems coexist with ADHD and how best to treat them.

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by problems with concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity. It cannot be completely cured, but proper therapy and psychoeducation allow you to lead a satisfying life. The first symptoms of ADHD occur in childhood, but it happens that the diagnosis is made only in adults.

Symptoms of ADHD

People with ADHD syndrome have:

  • Attention deficit – means a problem with maintaining attention on the tasks performed. These people often make mistakes or jump from one activity to another, which is why they sometimes do not finish the activities they have started. Sometimes they avoid situations that require a long mental effort.
  • Impulsivity – people with ADHD make decisions without analyzing the possible effects. This leads to risky behaviors and ill-considered spending.
  • Hyperactivity – i.e. problems with staying still. A person with ADHD often fidgets or plays with objects, and in stressful situations, they move even when it is not appropriate in a given situation.

ADHD Treatment

When working with people with ADHD syndrome, the best results are achieved by a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Psychotherapy allows you to better cope with the symptoms of the disorder, which hinder daily functioning and negatively affect social relationships.

If ADHD occurs in a child, family therapy is often used. It gives the whole family the skills needed to raise a person with a neurodevelopmental disorder. Pharmacotherapy mainly uses psychostimulant drugs that increase the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Why is it worth using ADHD therapy?

  • therapy in our office is based on the assumption that ADHD is an organic disorder that requires support on many levels: emotional, social and pharmacological
  • We offer a tailor-made therapeutic plan that may include regular psychotherapy sessions, trauma management, tension reduction, and interpersonal skills development
  • our IPSK method takes into account the diversity of ADHD symptoms and their links to diagnoses such as autism or Asperger’s syndrome

Support for women and men with ADHD
