Support for young parents is psychological help for people who have recently welcomed their first child into the world or are preparing for this event. It is aimed at facilitating adaptation to a new role, learning to cope with difficult emotions and counteracting problems such as postpartum depression.
Why is psychological support for young parents important?
The birth of a longed-for child is a positive event in the life of a family. However, it is tantamount to the need to make major changes and master many new skills. Because of this, it can be a source of stress and anxiety.
People who are just starting their adventure with parenthood sometimes experience problems such as:
- postpartum depression – occurs mainly in women, but sometimes it also affects fathers,
- mood swings – mainly associated with fatigue and nervous tension,
- psychosomatic disorders – including headaches and problems with the digestive system,
- sleep problems – caused by both childcare and excessive stress,
- reduced self-esteem – as a result of comparing oneself with other parents,
- difficulties in partner relationships – result m.in. lack of time for oneself and conflicts over the division of duties.
When is it worth taking advantage of support for young parents?
This form of support can be used by all parents, especially those among them who:
- they feel a strong fear of how they will cope in a new role,
- do not have good parenting role models due to their upbringing in a problematic family,
- struggle with emotional problems, e.g. mood disorders,
- feel overwhelmed by responsibilities,
- experience the difficulties of single parenthood.
