Male mental disorders

Male mental disorders are problems that often take a specific form in men. This group includes m.in. issues related to body perception or fatherhood, as well as depressive disorders.

Body image issues

Many men have problems accepting their own bodies. The cult of a perfect figure and attractive appearance affects not only women. The media promote patterns that are difficult to meet, especially without the help of strenuous training, and often also aesthetic medicine treatments. A negative assessment of the body leads to anxiety disorders and makes it difficult to build partnerships. In some men, it results in sexual dysfunction. The result can also be bigorexia – a disorder that manifests itself in an obsession with building muscle mass.

The Shock of Being a Father

Typical male mental difficulties include the shock associated with fatherhood. Problems with adapting to a new role can occur even if the child was planned and the man has a stable personal and professional situation. They are caused by fear of the challenges that come with parenthood, a sense of responsibility for a defenseless person, fear for the child’s health, and sometimes also the lack of a good role model for the father.

Depression in men

The symptoms of depression in men are no different from the symptoms we observe in women. Therefore, they include a long-term decrease in mood, loss of interest, a pessimistic vision of the future or sleep problems. The difference is that men are much less likely to seek professional help. There is still a myth that showing emotions, and especially crying, is a sign of weakness, while a real man should be strong. An important element of therapy is understanding that emotions are a typical thing for humans.
