Biofeedback

Biofeedback

Biofeedback, or biological feedback, is a therapeutic method that involves monitoring physiological changes in the body. It was used m.in. in the treatment of mental illnesses and chronic pain, as well as in rehabilitation and relaxation.

What is the biofeedback method?

Biofeedback is possible because the brain emits waves of different frequencies that can be recorded. In this method, we use a special device that records physiological changes in the body. This allows the patient to recognize how different thoughts and feelings affect individual body functions.

The first experiments with the EEG method were conducted in the 30s of the twentieth century by Hans Berger. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) had a great influence on its development.

Types of biofeedback

There are several types of biofeedback, but the following are of particular importance in psychotherapy:

  • Biofeedback EEG (neurofeedback)

It is based on the analysis of brain waves recorded by EEG, which reflect different states of the nervous system. These signals can be turned into readable graphs or games, which helps train the brain and supports m.in treatment. depression, ADHD and concentration disorders.

  • Biofeedback EMG

It uses electromyography (EMG) to monitor muscle activity and nerve function. It informs the patient about the level of muscle tone, which helps reduce stress and is used both in the treatment of anxiety disorders and in rehabilitation.

Biofeedback in children and adolescents

Biofeedback is a method that can be used when working with patients of different ages. In the case of children and teenagers, m.in helps. with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and concentration problems.
