What are psychotherapies for children?

Psychotherapy is a method of treatment that also transmits very good effects to children. Of course, we work with the youngest a little differently than with adults – apart from talking, we use play.

What methods do we use in psychotherapy of children?

To get to know and understand a child’s emotions, oral dialogue is not enough. That is why we often reach for other methods. Intuitive drawing is a popular tool. A child who draws spontaneously often transfers his thoughts and emotions to paper.

Another example is fairy tale therapy, which supports the emotional development of children very well. It helps tame fears and deal with difficult situations.

We also use elements of behavioral-cognitive therapy that aim to change abnormal patterns of thinking and behavior.

Of course, we always adapt the tools to the patient’s age, because it is different to work with a six-year-old than with an eleven-year-old. We also take into account the child’s character and interests.

We work closely with parents – we teach them how to support their child in difficult situations and how to react to their inappropriate behavior.

When is psychotherapy for children needed?

Psychotherapy is a good solution if the child struggles with difficulties such as anxiety, sadness, shyness, difficulties in establishing relationships, tantrums or aggression. They can be the result of, for example, trauma or tense relationships between caregivers.

We also work with the youngest who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism. In such a situation, m.in plays an important role. psychoeducation, because we help parents better understand the essence of neurodevelopmental disorders.
